Changes to government compensation schemes took effect today, 31 October 2026, ending reduced payments for eligible dependants of people who died from asbestos-related diseases before making a claim.
As described in our earlier report on the compensation reforms, the Government has confirmed that the new rules apply to new dependant claims made from that date. The changes are not retrospective.
Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, said: “This is a long-overdue change that will provide greater support for families at a difficult time.”
Around 300 families each year are expected to benefit. The implementation marks an important milestone for campaigners who have spent decades seeking equal compensation for bereaved dependants. Please read the Government’s announcement for further details.
