The HSE uses Men’s Health Week to highlight the risks of asbestos to tradesmen

Men’s Health Week 2027 runs from 15 to 21 June. The HSE is using it to raise awareness of the risks of working with asbestos, particularly for tradespeople working in the construction sector.

People employed in skilled construction and maintenance trades are at a greater risk of developing mesothelioma compared with the wider population.

Occupations considered to have a particularly high level of exposure include

  • carpenters
  • electricians
  • floor fitters
  • heating and ventilation engineers
  • joiners
  • plumbers
  • wall tilers

Asbestos may still be found in many buildings built or refurbished before 2000. Everyday activities such as refurbishment, repairs, installation work and maintenance can disturb asbestos materials and release harmful fibres into the air.

The HSE provides a guide for tradespeople on practical steps to reduce the risks of asbestos.
